'The Golden Stories of Breckenridge' is a series of documentaries about various aspects of Breckenridge history. Each video includes interviews with historical experts and people with first hand knowledge, or, in some cases direct descendents of early Breckenridge families. The series is sponsored by the Town of Breckenridge and produced by local videographer, Wendy Wolfe. The videos, which are approximately 25 minutes long, may be viewed on local TV, and at the Edwin Carter Museum during the museums regularly scheduled hours. To date, the Town has completed three tapes in the series.
1- “The Depression Years” features three residents who lived in Breckenridge in the 30s and 40s. The stories of these early residents are weaved together with film and photos to paint a vivid picture of life in early Breckenridge. Included are their colorful and touching memories of the railroad, the dredge boats, the early schools, and recreation in Breckenridge. 2- “The High Line” tells the story of the narrow gauge railroad which came through Breckenridge from 1882 to 1937. Building a track over Boreas Pass was one of the most impressive accomplishments in railroad history. The route was known as the High Line and the railroader who worked this line endured long, hard hours, raging winters, and runaway trains. 3- “Rest in Peace” is the story of Valley Brook Cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1882 and is still in use today. It is the final resting place for many of Breckenridge's earliest pioneers. Their stories, including the challenges they endured, are reflected in Victorian symbolism. The Town has recently restored many of the ornate monuments and most of the elaborate iron fencing. The cemetery is a beautiful, natural sanctuary where wildflowers, wildlife, and memories thrive.
The videos, which are produced in VHS format, are available for purchase at the Breckenridge Activity Centers or at Town Hall for $20. For additional information or to purchase a video you may also contact Laurie Best, Town of Breckenridge, at: laurieb@townofbreckenridge.com or 970-547-3112.
