Barney Ford
Museum Hours
The Barney Ford House Museum honors Barney L. Ford, an escaped slave who prospered and became a prominent entrepreneur and black civil rights pioneer in Colorado. In 1880, Ford became the first black businessman in Breckenridge when he opened Ford’s Restaurant and Chop House.
Located at 111 East Washington Avenue, the Barney Ford House was designed and built in 1882 for Ford, his wife Julia and their three children by prominent craftsman Elias Nashold. In its day, the house was considered a showplace home in Breckenridge. The museum is open thanks to a collaborative effort between the Town of Breckenridge and the Saddle Rock Society, a nonprofit organization that owns the property. The goals of the Barney Ford House Museum are to educate the public about Barney Ford and the role of people of color in Colorado history. “We shall not fail our future by losing our past.” - Barney L.
