The purpose of the Breckenridge Open Space program is to preserve lands that define and enhance the unique mountain character of the Town of Breckenridge, with the goal of maintaining our community’s quality of life for present and future generations. Through property acquisition and management, the program protects public open space lands that contain trails, sensitive natural resources, historical sites, view corridors or other open space and community conservation values.
In 1997, Town of Breckenridge citizens voted to add a .5% sales tax to be used exclusively for open space acquisition and management. Since that time, 4,425 acres of land have been acquired and protected as public open space. Over 47 miles of trails have been built and maintained to provide public recreational access. Preserving and providing access to backcountry trails from most neighborhoods in Town has been a priority of the program. The program is overseen by the Breckenridge Open Space Advisory Commission (BOSAC) and the Breckenridge Town Council.
In the past two years, the Breckenridge Open Space program has acquired 13 open space properties, totaling 270 acres, constructed 5.6 miles of new trail connections and maintained 47.3 miles of trails in the Town’s trail network. In addition to our acquisition and trail development accomplishments, the department has undertaken several long-range planning efforts, including the completion of the Golden Horseshoe and the Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve management plans and the continuation of annual ecological research in Cucumber Gulch. Open Space staff were also instrumental in the planning and execution bicycling improvements that resulted the Town being recognized as a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community through the League of American Bicyclists. Ongoing work includes planning land management approaches to several important open space parcels, scheduling summer trail projects, and implementing forest health treatments on open space properties.
