Breckenridge Public Art

3 cowboys

Goals for the Public Art Program:
The placement of art in public places enriches, stimulates and enhances the aesthetic experience. Public Art is designed to complement the visual experience that is an important element of Breckenridge’s identity. In addition, the Public Art Program is designed as a contribution to the Town’s economic draw and to foster educational opportunities for the community. By virtue of the effort, the community is a richer place for residents and visitors.

Mission:
The Breckenridge Public Art Commission is devoted to developing a public art collection by selecting, locating, placing and maintaining art in public places, exposing the community to the arts, fostering education programs and advancing economic growth.

A Brief History of the Public Art Program:
The Art in Public Places Master Plan was adopted in 1996. Work on the master plan began in 1992 with a group of citizens and Town employees. The master plan was updated in 2006. The purpose of the Art in Public Master Plan is to provide a guide to the Public Art Commission in locating, selecting and maintaining public art within the Town of Breckenridge. This master plan is intended to provide objective direction to develop art for public places.

Projects Currently Underway:
To date, there are 23 pieces of public art in the permanent collection. A photo gallery of some of the collection pieces can be viewed here. The public art program also includes the seasonal Sculpture on the Blue Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition and the Breckenridge Theatre Gallery.

Public Art Commission:
The Public Art Commission administers the Breckenridge Public Art Program. The Public Art Commission is a voluntary 7 member commission appointed by the Town Council for their passion and experience in the arts. The Commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 4 pm in the Administrative Conference Room on the third floor of Town Hall, 150 Ski Hill Road. All meetings are open to the public. The Commission also provides support to staff for the Breckenridge Arts District specifically with promotion/marketing, fund raising and special events.
