In 1978 moose were reintroduced to Colorado with the release of 24 moose with more released in subsequent years. Today, the moose population is thriving in Colorado. Estimates put their numbers around 2,300.
Summit County has a healthy moose population and encounters between people and moose are growing. Most of the time these encounters pose no threat to people especially when people keep a safe distance.
But moose are unpredictable and big. Colorado’s adult moose can run 35 miles per hour, weigh up to 1,000 pounds and stand six feet tall at the shoulder. Moose have very few natural enemies in the wild and, as a result, do not fear humans as much as most other big game species.
Join us on Monday, January 26, to learn more about moose and staying safe during moose encounters.
