Former McCain Parcel Formally Named Little Daisy Open Space

BRECKENRIDGE, CO — Breckenridge Town Council has adopted the name “Little Daisy Open Space” for the open space parcel formerly named the McCain parcel by resolution at their July 14, 2026 regular meeting. The name was recommended by the Breckenridge Open Space Advisory Council (BOSAC). "Little Daisy is indeed the name of a local mining claim,” said BOSAC chairperson Nikki LaRochelle. “While this was the impetus behind the naming idea, it only plays a small role in why the name stuck.”

The McCain parcel is distinct within Breckenridge’s open space offerings in that it is one of the few properties that is relatively flat. This characteristic provides a level of accessibility that many other parcels do not, particularly for the youngest and oldest members of the community. LaRochelle specifies, “We were drawn to a name that reflected this spirit of accessibility and invitation. Little Daisy is a name that can bring joy to a five-year-old and grandparent alike. It's memorable without being self-important, distinctive without being obscure, and carries with it a sense of warmth that feels appropriate for a place intended to be widely enjoyed."

The name actually only applies to the portion of the parcel programmed for public use, east of the Blue River.  The portion west of the Blue River is planned to be closed to the public to protect wildlife habitat.  The estimated size of the newly named Little Daisy Open Space is 20 acres.

Staff are working to construct soft-surface trails and install additional landscaping on the parcel this fall, aiming to open to public access in Spring 2027.
