Convenient Leaf-Peeping with the Aspen Alley Shuttle
BRECKENRIDGE, CO — The Town of Breckenridge will offer a free designated shuttle to the Aspen Alley trail over three weeks to alleviate trailhead congestion due to leaf viewing. The Aspen Alley shuttle is a 15-passenger van that will run daily from September 12-October 3 from 7:00am to 8:00pm.
“We were fortunate to secure grant funding for the shuttle,” said Duke Barlow, Breckenridge Open Space and Trails Director. “It does double-duty by reducing parking congestion at the Wakefield trailhead while giving visitors comfortable, all-day access to the trailhead.”
The shuttle route is a continuous loop between the Stephen C. West Ice Arena transit stop and the Wakefield trailhead, a popular leaf viewing location in the Fall, picking up approximately every 15 minutes depending on traffic volume. Parking at the Wakefield trailhead will be closed during this 3-week period except for two ADA accessible spaces and shuttle turnaround. Hikers can park for free at the east side of the ice arena lot. Visitors can also park for free at the South Gondola parking structure and take the free Main Street Trolley to the ice arena.
Breckenridge Open Space and Trails Division has proposed a new hiking and uphill biking trail adjacent to Aspen Alley that, depending on Forest Service approval, could be completed in late October. Barlow said, “While the new trail won’t be open for this year’s very early peak fall leaves, we hope the public will be able to enjoy it soon.”
While Aspen Alley is a big draw for viewing fall colors, the Open Space staff recommend some less-trafficked alternatives including Pence Miller, Hiker’s Gold/Mineral Hill, Minnie Mine/X10U8, and McCullough Gulch. Trail locations are visible on an interactive map at https://breckost.com/the-trails.
