The Town’s old Welsbach streetlight fixtures are inefficient and outdated, which necessitated the conversion. Annually, 145 service requests are made for repairs and maintenance of Welsbach fixtures. The cost of maintaining the outdated streetlights is compounded by limited replacement parts and energy inefficiencies. A single Welsbach fixture uses 579 kWh/year, while a new streetlight Providence fixture uses only 248 kWh/yr. The street light conversion not only supports our DarkSky initiative but will also create 418,636 kWh in annual energy savings and a 25% reduction in annual service requests. The conversion is expected to not only improve the quality of our night sky but also reduce maintenance and energy costs for our streetlights.

The schedule for streetlight conversions has been accelerated to have all Town-owned streetlights converted to compliant lighting by the end of 2026, per Town Council's direction on June 9, 2026. However, 167 streetlights are owned by Xcel Energy-not the Town. The Town would like to see these Xcel owned lights converted as well and continues to discuss potential conversion with them. To date, roughly 46% or 714 of the 1539 streetlights in town have been converted to new Providence fixtures. By fall of 2026, Town staff will convert the remaining 658 Town owned streetlights. Town staff continues to work with Xcel Energy on a conversion plan for the 167 streetlights under their ownership. (As of 06/23/26)
